Benefits, Concerns, and Vendor Risk Management Considerations for Hospital Data In Transit
Protected health information (PHI) is at the forefront of every vendor risk assessment. Most of these risk assessments will quickly identify if a vendor is accessing, transmitting, or storing a healthcare organization's PHI with a "yes" or "no" response. However, these assessments don't always identify all the various ways PHI is accessed and transmitted (even stored) by a vendor.
This is why many vendor risk assessments fail to adequately verify if those vendor communication channels are secure. Healthcare organizations must know how their vendors access, transmit, and store PHI and other sensitive data to remain compliant to protect their organization's and patient's data.
